Digits & Threads
The member-supported online magazine for Canadian fibre and textile arts, crafts and industry
Hi Kim W,

Just as we're beginning to believe the summer may actually arrive soon, we have to start planning in earnest for the fall. A sad but exciting part of working in publishing.

And my goodness, are we planning for an epic fall, during which we'll mark our first birthday as a publication. We're hoping you'll be a part of creating that epicness (I made up that word).

Here's what we're looking to publish this late summer and fall:

  • Sewing patterns and/or tutorials (could be garments, accessories, household items, etc.)
  • Crochet patterns and/or tutorials (for accessories, household items, toys)
  • Macrame tutorials and/or patterns
  • Articles about weaving (especially cultural weaving traditions; profiles of accomplished weavers; articles about the history of industry related to weaving and cloth manufacturing in Canada)
  • Quilting patterns and/or tutorials (patterns could be for full-size quilts, wall-hangings, or other kinds of small projects)
  • Articles and/or tutorials about spinning yarn
  • Profiles of Canadian fibre or textile artists, projects or businesses (some we have in mind are Amina Haswell of Prairie Breeze Folk Art Studio, the story behind the Ontario Flannel Shirt, an interview with or profile of artist Letitia Fraser)
  • Own-voices essays (personal essays related to your unique experience of fibre or textile craft or art in any context)
  • Articles related to timely events or conversations going on in Canada or in the craft community, as experienced in Canada, which are related to fibre and textiles.
  • Fibre/textile virtual tourism (especially featuring locations in the North). Virtual tourism articles can focus on a single place, like a museum or gallery; a location like a city or village, with a focus on fibre/textile sights and experiences; or a journey, like a road trip, bike trip, hike, etc. The idea is to give readers a way to experience a wide variety of places in Canada, from home, all related to their love of fibre and textiles.

We work exclusively with contributors residing in Canada. We are keen to work with BIPOC writers and writers from other marginalized or equity-seeking communities. As well, we welcome pitches from emerging writers, artists and designers who have never submitted work professionally for publication. We are happy to provide mentorship and to walk you through how all this works if you'd like that.

We pay all contributors, will provide you with complimentary access to the magazine for 30 days after publication so you can enjoy your work as our members do, and we're working on establishing a new optional partnership program exclusively for our contributors, which we'll tell you more all about in a few weeks when it's ready.

Pitches should include:
  • For articles: A brief synopsis of your idea, a list of folks you intend to approach for interview or sources you'll consult (if applicable).
  • For patterns: A description of the project, sizing information if applicable, a sketch of the project, materials required (we may be able to source materials for you), list of techniques involved. You do not need to have completed the project in order to pitch it to us. Note that we publish a wide range of garment sizes and are partial to garment patterns that involve notes indicating to makers where they can alter patterns for their own body measurements or fit desires.
  • For tutorials: A description of the technique, how you will convey the instructions (through text, photos, video, etc.). If you have previously published a tutorial, please provide the link so we can get a feel for your style of presentation.

We are aiming to provide professional photography for our fall patterns, so please indicate in your pitch if you intend to provide your own high-quality photographs or if you will ship a finished sample to us for photography.

Please reply to this email with your pitch or send an email to editorial director Kate Atherley, kate@ninetenpublications.ca.
Thank you for your interest in contributing to Digits & Threads! We look forward to receiving your submissions.

We will respond to every pitch; please keep in mind that it may take us a few weeks.

Cheers,

Kim Werker
